Lesson 1: Women who changed science

Science is often taught as a list of findings, which makes it easy to forget that findings come from people working under particular conditions. Many of the women in this lesson made their discoveries while excluded from laboratories, salaries, or credit. Their work is now standard textbook science.

Excluded, and still contributing

For most of modern scientific history, women were formally or informally barred from universities, laboratories, professional societies, and authorship. The contributions in this lesson happened despite those conditions — which tells you both what was achieved and what was likely lost.

Discovery is global

Important work came from Italy, Norway, India, the United States, Iran and beyond. Neuroscience and its neighbouring fields were never the property of one country or one kind of person, even when the published record made it look that way.

Credit is part of the story

Some discoveries were named after supervisors rather than the people who made them. Historians call this pattern the Matilda effect: the systematic under-recognition of women's scientific contributions. Recognising it is part of reading the history accurately.
