Lesson 2: How memories form and stick

Encoding, consolidation, retrieval — and the role of sleep.

You can probably recall what you ate yesterday, but not what you ate three Tuesdays ago. Both moments were experienced. Only one was kept.

In this lesson you will

A memory is not filed away like a photo. It is built. Attention creates an initial fragile pattern of activity, that pattern is strengthened over hours and days, and retrieving it later reactivates — and can subtly change — the memory.

Encoding: getting it in

Attention gates what gets encoded. Information you notice, connect to something you already know, or find meaningful is much more likely to be retained than information you passively skim.

Consolidation: making it stable

Newly formed memories are fragile. Over hours and days, and especially during sleep, they are strengthened and reorganized. This is a major reason that a full night of sleep after studying supports retention better than an all-nighter.

Retrieval: using it changes it

Recalling something reactivates the pattern of activity that supports it. Practising retrieval strengthens the memory, and it can also introduce small changes — which is one reason confident memories can still be inaccurate.
